What is 'Queensway'?

Queensway sweeps through the picture

It's an area of agricultural land and natural countryside that borders the Queensway - which itself circles round the back of Blackpool airport toward St Anne's. Broadly speaking it is where St Anne's stops, and the countryside begins - at least at present.

Why is it so Special?

Biological diversityWell, its one of the Fylde's most biologically diverse habitats, and home to all manner of important and threatened wildlife. Part of the reason for this diversity is the range of soil types within the site, and the low lying nature of the land, much of which is prone to flooding.

It is also the buffer that separates St Anne's from the flood plain, and keeps wildlife safe and protected, by preventing it from being disturbed by urban life.

So why does it need defending?

As one of the last large green open spaces in St Anne's it attracts the eye of developers and money-hungry politicians who see it as something to be exploited and built on.

Would that Be such a bad thing?

It will be for the wildlife that lives there. They would quickly become homeless and either die out as territory and food sources disappear, or they will have to fight to take over a territory already being used by others.

But it's not just the wildlife. The developments will also be bad for the local community. More cars, more traffic, greater risk of flooding, more pollution, more pressure on existing socal infrastructure (doctors, dentists and so on).

SO WHAT ARE QED doing ABOUT IT?

We aim to defend the natural environment and the local community from the threat of inappropriate development.

Haven for wildlifeWe want to make people more aware of the issues, and of the plans, and we want to work with others to help defend the local community and the wildlife

To find out more, please use the links on the top left of this page. If you want to get in touch we'd love to hear from you. If you'd like to become a Defender and maybe help deliver leaflets in your street when something important needs to be said, you're most welcome to let us know your contact details.

One thing we do need at the moment is someone to help with organising fundraising activity. We are all volunteers giving our time, but we still need to pay for things like printing and postage, so if you think you can help please get in touch.
